How can our driveways improve water sustainability?

In the UK, where heavy rainfall and flooding are becoming more and more common, new solutions are needed. One way to do this is permeable paving – surfaces for driveways or patios that water can drain through. Permeable paving is a sustainable alternative to concrete or tarmac surfaces.

Permeable paving allows rainwater to soak through its surface, into the ground. This tops up groundwater, reduces the amount of water run-off, and helps improve the health of surrounding nature.

By limiting the amount of water going into surface water drains, permeable paving slows down surface water, reducing flooding risk and water pollution. Even large amounts of water from heavy rainfall can seep through the paving, leaving surfaces like roads, driveways and patios free from floods and puddles!

It's a win-win solution, increasing the amount of water that’s held by the soil, and reducing the risk of flooding to houses, all whilst helping to look after our planet.

As we deal with climate change challenges like flooding, using permeable paving for driveways is one step towards sustainable water management.
